Description
94 Jasper Morris
Fine dark red colour. Immediately powerful, high class nose, not leathery but showing that the wine is going to be intense and strict. Very rich fruit, extremely powerful, light superficial evolution but so intensely youthful underneath. This vintage combines the great and the good. Definitely a dark fruited style. To keep another five years ideally. *5-Star Wine* (6/2018)
93 Burghound
The relatively deeply pitched and quite ripe blue and violet-suffused nose flashes additional breadth in the form of discreet earth and game hints. There is excellent volume and mid-palate density to the naturally sweet, rich and sappy flavors that are wrapped around a still moderately firm tannic spine while the lingering finish tighens up considerably. As is often the case this is a relatively refined Nuits and while it's still on the way up it is not so structured or austere that it could not be enjoyed now provided that it was given 30 to 45 minutes of air first. 93 John Gilman
This is only the second vintage of Clos de la Maréchale produced by Monsieur Mugnier and I was mightily impressed with how the wine is evolving with bottle age. There is a purity of fruit and precision to the soil expression here that is truly exceptional, and once this wine is properly mature a few more years down the road, it is going to be a stunning drink! The bouquet is already beautiful, soaring from the glass in a blend of sappy black cherries, raw cocoa, a hint of nutskin, gamebird, dark soil tones, woodsmoke and a topnote of coffee bean. On the palate the wine is deep, refined and full-bodied, with a sappy core, stunning mineral drive and grip, ripe, buried tannins, tangy acids and a long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. As 2005 is such a high acid vintage, this wine may end up taking a bit longer than I project to completely blossom, but there is no doubt that it is going to be dazzling for many decades to come! 93+ (3/2023)
93 Wine Advocate
One of the finest renditions of this cuvée remains the 2005 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale, a deep, elegantly fleshy, medium to full-bodied wine evocative of cherries, dark berries, espresso roast, raw cocoa and rich soil tones. Structured around ripe tannins and lively acids, it is already drinking superbly. (WK) (4/2021)
93 Vinous
Still quite fresh and vibrant, the 2005 Clos de la Maréchale offers all of the luxurious radiance and intensity that makes wines from this year so appealing. Soaring floral and spiced aromatics lift the dark red and purplish fruit nicely, while beams of supporting tannin remind us we are in Nuits Saint-Georges. (AG) (1/2019)
93 Wine Enthusiast
A complete wine, with richness, exotic spices and a great depth of flavor. The tannins are dark, intense, flavored with red plums, the layers of tannin, wood and fruit peeling away to a core of great concentration. Impressive. (RV) (10/2009)
92 International Wine Cellar
Bright red-ruby. Cool, slightly inky aromas of blackberry liqueur and black cherry; slightly high-toned. Offers powerful black cherry, crushed berry and mineral flavors sexed up by the uncanny sweetness of the vintage. Very long and strong on the end, but the substantial tannins are supple. Here's a vintage in which this wine is markedly different from the rest of the cellar, and clearly identifiable as coming from Nuits-Saint-Georges. 92+ (4/2008)
Jancis Robinson
Very firm dark almost blueish crimson. Vigorous, muscular wine. Massively fruity and intense. You can easily imagine it was stuffed with tannin in its early years but it is now drinkable. Really punches its way out of the glass. Mid weight with a firm finish and no shortage of acidity but not at all meagre. Full of energy. 16.5/20 points (JR) (7/2015)
